Northlake Family Prayer Guide

Why We Are Praying These Prayers
We all know and carry the deep conviction that the Christian is to be a person of prayer. Paul enjoins, "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess 5:17), and we think him not to be exaggerating for emphasis sake. Living life as a follower of Jesus is to be lived in the context of the ceaseless awareness of His presence. We want this. We want to "devote [ourselves] to prayer" (Col 4:2). We want to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions" (Eph 6:18).

But how? With the demands of life, how can my heart become regularly aware of God's presence? With everything else clamoring for my attention, how can my mind collect itself enough to speak an intelligible word to God?

The good news is that this is not a new problem, and there are some VERY old practices to help us along the way. The ancient Jews, Jesus, and the early church all committed to set times of day to stop and pray the Psalms and other key texts of their faith (i.e. the Shema, the Lord's Prayer, etc.)

"Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice." (Ps 55:17) This passage served as the foundation for a thrice daily rhythm of prayer. Their day began at sundown. So it started with prayer, was centered by prayer, and concluded in prayer. This was still being practiced by the disciples and early church.

"One day Peter & John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer-three in the afternoon." (Acts 3:1) Following this example, for the next 6 weeks we will repeat this week of prayers as a practice of God's presence. So join in three times a day with Psalms, Scriptures, and prayers of the church as one voice scattered through Atlanta. Let us pray!

A Few Words about the Set up of This Prayer Guide

  1. Keep your Bible handy. This prayer guide will have you praying through the texts for the upcoming sermon as well as a Psalm every time you pray. You'll need a Bible handy.
  2. Keep your Link handy. Each time of prayer has an open-ended section called "Petitions and Intercessions..." for you to share the needs on your heart. This is a great time to pray the concerns in the Link.
  3. Format: Each prayer time follows the same order: Opening Prayer, Psalm, Sermon Text, Petitions and Intercessions, Lord's Prayer, Prayer for the Day, and Concluding Prayer.

Suggestions for Making this Meaningful

  • Pray out loud. Rather than simply reading these prayers and passages silently to yourself, pray them out loud. It helps to focus your mind and open your heart to the words.
  • Set a reasonable pace. This guide includes prayers for three times a day. You may need to start with one time a day, then move to two, and, when you are ready, three.
  • Set a secure time/place. The quickest way to not do this is to plan to do it whenever your schedule allows. Most likely, you'll get busy and not get around to it. Take some time to consider your daily routine and where you can choose time to be alone to pray meaningfully. I have found alarms on my phone to be a HUGE help in remembering to observe the times of prayer that I have chosen. Be creative in your own way of remembering when to pray!
  • Keep at it! Guilt is counterproductive. If you miss some times or can only do it once a day, don't worry! Creating consistent rhythms of prayer takes time just like initiating any new discipline or routine into your life.
  • Remember the church. Though you pray alone, you are not praying alone! These prayers are lifting the voice of the church up in unison as it is scattered all across our city. Keeping that in mind deepens the sense of what you are participating in.

The day has been breathless, Lord. I stop now for a few moments and I wonder: Is the signature of the holy over the rush of the day? Or have I bolted ahead, anxiously trying to solve problems that do not belong to me? Holy Spirit please show me: how to work relaxed, how to make each task an offering of faith, how to view interruptions as doors to service, how to see each person as my teacher in things eternal. In the name of him who always worked unhurried. Amen. (from Prayers from the Heart)

Lord's Prayer

Prayer for Today
Almighty God, my heavenly Father: I have sinned against you, though my own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, in what I have done and what I have left undone. For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive all my offenses; and grant that I may serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your Name. Amen. (BCP)

Concluding Prayer
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Concluding Prayer
O God, grant us, we pray, a heart wide open to all this joy and beauty, and save our souls from being so steeped in care or so darkened by passion that we pass heedless and unseeing when even the thorn bush by the wayside is aflame with Your glory. (Walter Rauschenbusch)

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.
